We love rich creamy beverages made from almonds and other nuts, known also as nut milk! The downsides are that they can be spendy and have a lot of additives. Well, a couple of weeks ago, we had a fantastic discussion in our FB group and learned how to make dairy-free milk at home – in about 30 seconds!
Recipe:
1/4 cup nuts or seeds of choice
3 cups of water
Put ingredients in a high-speed blender (such as Vitamix) and blend for about 15 seconds. That’s it, you got yourself a full mason jar of fresh, delicious, dairy-free milk!
My favorite nuts or seeds to use are sunflower, hemp or walnut and you can also use pumpkin, hazelnut, pecan, and others. Naturally, you can get fancy and add more flavor. My favorite flavored variation includes 4 drops stevia, 2 teaspoons vanilla, a little cinnamon, nutmeg and a pinch of salt.
Here’s the best part: it’s incredibly inexpensive. 1.5lbs bag of Organic Hemp Seeds, which you can find at your local grocery store or online, costs about $15. Using the recipe above, you can make about SEVENTEEN 32-oz cartons of Hemp Milk – that’s $0.88 per carton! Compare that with a carton of Hemp Milk at a grocery store, which costs at least $3.99.
That’s super cool and we actually prefer the fresh taste of the DIY dairy-free milk. The milk will store in your fridge for about 3 days, so we make a fresh large mason jar every other day or so. And as a very important cherry on top, consider the waste – 17 empty cartons compare to just 1 bag of nuts or seeds.
We want to make a special shout-out to our customer Terri B.W., who inspired us and shared this method in the FB group conversation. Let us know what you think if you try this and if you have any recipe and flavor recommendations for us!
Here’s to great taste and great health, happy campers!
